On Wednesday, Boris Johnson announced that schools would close on Friday except to the children of key workers and vulnerable children.  One of the reasons for school closures is that as our staff increasingly self-isolate (due to illness, pre-existing medical conditions or household members with symptoms) we are unable to provide a safe environment for our children to be in.  In order to function, schools need more than just teachers: we need people to keep the school clean and germ free; we need people to clean the toilets; we need people to answer the phone and contact parents; we need first aiders; we need people to prepare food. The list can be endless at times.

As part of the Government’s announcement on Wednesday, the prime minister estimated that in an average sized school there would be around 40 children attending. He also urged schools to stay open over Easter to ensure that key workers could continue to go to work. As a Trust, we were confident that we would be able to do this. Our staff are unswerving in their dedication to their job and our children; they have all volunteered to work over Easter and take on the different roles needed in our schools.

However, the announcement made over night has caused us some concern. We estimate that we have approximately 300 children across both schools who have at least one parent who falls into the Key worker category.  Even with our amazing staff, we cannot guarantee that we could open to all of these children for any sustained period.

When considering if your child needs to come to school on Monday in order for you to carry out an essential role in keeping the country functioning please note the following points

  • All children should be at home if they can be.
  • If there is another parent/adult who can look after your child, they should not come to school even if you are a key worker

If that is not possible (for example both parents are key workers) the following guidance is given:
