Music Intent

Intent: In music, pupils will explore and develop their creativity through composing and improvising. They will engage in activities that encourage expression and collaboration, using both voice and instruments to create their own unique pieces. Through structured lessons and hands-on experiences, children will learn the basics of musical notation, rhythm, and melody, while experimenting with sound to express ideas and emotions. This approach supports the National Curriculum by fostering an understanding of musical elements, developing listening skills, and promoting the joy of making music, all while encouraging teamwork, problem-solving, and critical thinking.

Support: We recognise the importance of music within the curriculum and what it can offer our children. During your child’s journey here at Orrell Lamberhead Green, we quickly identify each individual child’s starting points within music using the Early Learning Goals strand: ‘Understanding the world’ (EYFS Development Matters 2020 statements and ELGs). This enables our highly trained staff to ensure your child’s musical journey starts with the correct foundations. Our music curriculum offers lots of opportunities for quality speaking and listening using an excellent scheme (Charanga) and well-planned musical experiences and activities (teacher-led or child-led). We know it is imperative for your child to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to be confident musicians, so this is why oracy is the main focus in Foundation Stage where the children will build their nursery rhyme repertoire through speaking and listening activities. During their time in Foundation Stage, they will begin to develop their musical vocabulary which will strengthen throughout their time of OLG. The scheme we carefully selected will support your child in becoming confident and vocal musicians with the scheme following the National Curriculum Our music lessons also support your child’s ability to connect emotionally and socially to music through different artists (such as Bob Marley, Adele, ABBA and The Beatles) and through a range of genres – there is something for every child. The scheme allows our staff to support our children with embedding knowledge and retrieving knowledge as each unit and each year group shapes the children’s musical knowledge. At OLG, we recognise the important of understanding your child’s cognitive, social and emotional developments to effectively deliver high quality music lessons. We support our children through adaptive teaching (differentiate and scaffolding opportunities, group work or adult support and retrieval opportunities), all whilst ensuring high quality teaching is taking place

Inspire: We want all our children to realise the opportunities that music can provide for their future success in life. To support this, we provide our children an opportunity to take part in Wider Opportunities where they will learn to play an instrument (brass or strings instrument). These sessions consist of learning to read notes, learning to play the instruments and they even include end of term performances, all why being led by an experience musician. We excitedly accommodate music lessons throughout the week by an outside agency. We can offer your child the opportunity to become an expert in a range of instruments – piano, brass, strings, voice or percussion. We believe that giving your child chance to play and be exposed to a range of instruments will inspire them on their musical journey here at OLG. Our main aim in music is to expose your child to a world of music and to provide them with an opportunity to foster a love for music. Our music lessons ensure that all children, no matter of ability, have a chance to shine and for us, as staff, to identify up and coming talent. The scheme we have chosen to use inspires your child through high quality lessons whilst learning to play the glockenspiel.

Prepare: Throughout your child’s time at OLG, they will be provided with a thought out, carefully selected and planned curriculum which will prepare them for high school. Our curriculum has been tailored to suit the children’s needs to ensure they receive the BEST musical opportunities whilst ensuring they progress, achieving the National Curriculum objectives and giving them the best possible start for high school. We are aware that preparing our children for their next steps is vital for your child to succeed and I believe our musical opportunities will provide the time needed to allow your child to flourish. We take pride in knowing our pupils and families and are eager to celebrate their musical successes whether that being in school or out of school.
